Working Through a Potential CAUTI
Use this checklist to systematically review a suspected CAUTI against NHSN surveillance criteria.
Before beginning, gather the relevant urine culture results, documented signs and symptoms, urinary catheter insertion and removal dates, and the patient's admission timeline.
Tip: Pay particular attention to the infection window period, date of event, catheter eligibility, and whether the event meets the healthcare-associated infection definition.
This checklist supports consistent case evaluation but does not replace the current NHSN Patient Safety Component protocol. Always verify the final determination against the applicable NHSN definitions.
