First Human Infection with Shamonda Virus Reported in France

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control

The first documented human infection with Shamonda virus has been reported in France. Previously identified only in animals, the virus was detected in a severely ill patient who died in early October. Investigators are working to determine how the infection occurred and whether the virus contributed to the patient's death.

Why It's Worth Your Time

A virus previously known only to infect animals has now been identified in a human. With Shamonda virus recently emerging in European livestock, this case raises important questions about zoonotic transmission, diagnostic preparedness, and the potential for previously unrecognized human infections. The route of transmission and the virus's role in the patient's death remain unknown.

Study on the air gap effect when closing toilet lid on droplet and pathogen escaping from flushing

Huihui Zhang, Borui Chen, Alvin C.K. Lai

A pilot study examining how toilet-lid closure and the gap between the seat and bowl affect the escape of droplets and bioaerosols during flushing. The study tested E. coli and two viral surrogates, MS2 and P22.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Closing the lid helps, but it doesn’t create a perfect seal. This study shows how particles can still escape through the gap around the seat, and how that escape increases as the gap gets larger.

Raising the Bar: Necessary Resources and Structure for Effective Healthcare Facility Infection Prevention and Control Programs

Thomas R. Talbot et al.

A multisociety position paper outlining the leadership, staffing, expertise, reporting structure, and organizational support needed for effective infection prevention and control programs.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Because infection prevention can’t be effective from the organizational basement. This paper explains why access to senior clinical leadership, clear authority, and a seat where decisions are made are essential to a strong IPC program.

Major updates to FDA-recognized Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute breakpoints are a win for the fight against antimicrobial resistance

Romney M. Humphries; Patricia J. Simner

An overview of major progress in aligning FDA-recognized antimicrobial susceptibility breakpoints with current CLSI standards, and why updated breakpoints matter for accurate susceptibility reporting and antimicrobial resistance detection.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Because a susceptibility result is only as useful as the breakpoint behind it. This article explains why outdated breakpoints can affect how laboratories classify resistance and why the recent FDA recognition of updated CLSI breakpoints matters at the bench and for stewardship.

Emerging Infectious Diseases

Conversations with researchers and public health experts about studies published in CDC’s Emerging Infectious Diseases journal, including outbreaks, antimicrobial resistance, zoonotic disease, surveillance, and emerging pathogens.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Because this is where unusual pathogens, outbreak investigations, and emerging public health threats get discussed by the people actually studying them.

Science Into Practice

Conversations built around infection prevention research and how published findings translate into practice.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Because reading the paper is one thing. Hearing people unpack what the findings actually mean for infection prevention practice is another.

5 Second Rule

APIC’s monthly podcast covering infection prevention practice, professional life, common myths, and practical tools for IPs.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Because it feels like infection prevention people talking to infection prevention people, without making everything sound like a committee meeting.

SHEA

SHEA Podcasts

Podcasts from SHEA covering healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, research, and implementation across its ICHE, SHEA, and ASHE channels.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Because this is where infection prevention, hospital epidemiology, stewardship, and current research overlap. It’s a good way to stay connected to what SHEA experts are discussing without having to read every paper the minute it comes out.

Editors In Conversation

ASM Journals editors, researchers, and clinicians discuss clinical microbiology, infectious diseases, AST, antimicrobial resistance, diagnostics, and emerging issues.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Because this one gets into the weeds. If you like clinical microbiology, resistance mechanisms, diagnostics, and bench-relevant infectious disease topics, this is the rabbit hole.

Meet the Microbiologist

Conversations with scientists working across microbiology, including antimicrobial resistance, emerging infectious diseases, diagnostics, public health, genomics, and microbial ecology.

Why It's Worth Your Time

Because it takes you beyond the bench and into the bigger microbial world, while still regularly circling back to diagnostics, public health, and infectious disease.
